Cwm Rambles: Dorothy and Brian Archer

Brian and Dorothy Archer moved to Cwm in 1974. Brian died in 2009 while Dorothy lived at Isfryn until very recently.
Brian taught history at Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy until taking early retirement. Money was tight and they cut costs by using peat from the Mignant for the fire and by collecting wood from the Forestry for the same purpose. Permission for both these activities was eventually discontinued.
Both Brian and Dorothy enjoyed walking. Brian compiled a book of local walks in the style of Wainright (Famous Guides to the Lake District walks). Illustrations were by Sue Small and the pamphlet is republished here for the enjoyment of all residents. To prevent abuse the booklet is copyrighted.
Dorothy has been a prolific wood carver, specialising in Welsh Love Spoons but also carving the lovely Virgin Mary statue in St Mary's Church in Betws y Coed. She also kept exact weather records over many years. The records have now been transferred to a database. The trend they show is for continuous warming though Dorothy herself is a climate change sceptic.
These long-term records have been the inspiration for the Cwm Weather Station.
For the couple, their most important contribution to the community was setting up (with Cris Martindale in the first instance) the Cwm History Group. They realised that as the older generation died so too did their memories of living in the Cwm. They sought to preserve these memories with a series of "talking heads" interviews. These interviews have been transcribed and are available as a window into the past for future generations.
Christine Byrne (nee Archer.) February 2024.
Symudodd Brian a Dorothy Archer i Cwm yn 1974. Bu farw Brian yn 2009 tra bu Dorothy yn byw yn Isfryn tan yn ddiweddar iawn.
Bu Brian yn dysgu hanes yn Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy nes iddo ymddeol yn gynnar. Roedd arian yn brin ac roeddynt yn torri costau drwy ddefnyddio mawn o'r Mignant ar gyfer y tân a thrwy gasglu pren o'r goedwig i'r un pwrpas. Yn y pen draw, daethpwyd â'r caniatâd ar gyfer y ddau weithgaredd hyn i ben.
Roedd Brian a Dorothy yn mwynhau cerdded. Lluniodd Brian lyfr o deithiau cerdded lleol yn null Wainright (Teithiau Cerdded Enwog Guides to the Lake District). Cafwyd darluniau gan Sue Small ac mae’r pamffled yn cael ei ailgyhoeddi yma er mwynhad yr holl drigolion. Er mwyn atal camddefnydd, mae hawlfraint ar y llyfryn.
Mae Dorothy wedi bod yn gerfiwr pren toreithiog, yn arbenigo mewn Llwyau Caru Cymreig ond hefyd yn cerfio cerflun hyfryd o'r Forwyn Fair yn Eglwys y Santes Fair ym Metws y Coed. Cadwodd hefyd gofnodion tywydd manwl dros nifer o flynyddoedd. Mae'r cofnodion bellach wedi'u trosglwyddo i gronfa ddata. Y duedd a ddangosant yw cynhesu parhaus er bod Dorothy ei hun yn amheus o newid hinsawdd.
Mae'r cofnodion hirdymor hyn wedi bod yn ysbrydoliaeth i Orsaf Dywydd Cwm.
I'r cwpl, eu cyfraniad pwysicaf i'r gymuned oedd sefydlu (gyda Cris Martindale yn y lle cyntaf) Grŵp Hanes Cwm. Sylweddolon nhw wrth i’r genhedlaeth hŷn farw, felly hefyd eu hatgofion o fyw yn y Cwm. Ceisiasant gadw'r atgofion hyn gyda chyfres o gyfweliadau gyda thrigolion y Cwm.
Mae'r cyfweliadau hyn wedi'u trawsgrifio ac maent ar gael fel ffenestr i'r gorffennol ar gyfer cenedlaethau'r dyfodol.
